The One Teen Habit That Causes Wrinkles Later in Life

You know that look you make when you see a text that is bad news? Or when your friend tells you some juicy gossip? You scrunch up your face. You squeeze your eyes tight. You pull your mouth into a knot. It feels dramatic. It feels like nothing. But here is the thing. That little move you do a hundred times a day is cutting lines into your skin before you even hit twenty.

Think about the last time you looked in the mirror after crying or after being really stressed out. You might have noticed little lines around your eyes or between your eyebrows. They disappeared when you relaxed. But here is the sneaky part. The more you make the same expression over and over, the deeper those lines get. And they stop going away. That is the start of wrinkles.

Your skin when you are a teen is amazing. It is thick. It has lots of bounce. It heals fast. But it is not magic. Every time you scrunch, you fold the skin in the same spot. Imagine taking a piece of paper and folding it once. It looks fine. Fold it ten times. You see a crease. Fold it a thousand times. That crease never goes flat again. Your face is the same way.

You might not realize how much you do this. Watch yourself the next time you are on your phone. You probably go like this with your eyebrows. Or you squint at the screen. Or you purse your lips when you are thinking. These are muscle habits. Your brain tells your face to do them without you even knowing. And the problem is your muscles are strong. They keep doing the same movement. The skin above gets squished again and again.

Now here is where you can fight back. You do not have to stop making expressions. That would be weird. Nobody wants a frozen face. But you can start noticing. When you catch yourself squinting, stop. Ask yourself why. Maybe your screen is too bright or too dim. Maybe you forgot your glasses. Maybe you are just tired. Fix the thing causing the squint instead of just letting your face do the work.

Another big one is how you react to stuff. When something annoys you, do your eyebrows pinch together? Do you pull your mouth to one side? That little pinch between your eyebrows is called the eleven. It looks like two vertical lines. And it is one of the first things that turns permanent. You can train yourself to relax that spot. Take a breath instead of a scrunch. It sounds too simple. But it really works.

You also need to think about your face at rest. A lot of teens hold tension in their jaw and forehead without knowing it. You might be clenching your teeth or raising your eyebrows while you study. This constant small squeezing is like a workout for your wrinkle muscles. And just like working out makes your biceps bigger, working out your frown muscles makes those lines deeper.

So what do you do about all this? First, set a phone reminder that says relax your face. When it goes off, just drop your jaw loose. Let your lips part slightly. Let your forehead go smooth. Do it for five seconds. It will feel weird at first. But your face will learn to chill out. Second, when you catch yourself making a tight expression, stop and gently rub the spot. That gets blood flowing and softens the tension. Third, practice a soft look in the mirror. Not a smile. Not a frown. Just a calm resting face. Get used to how it feels.

Here is the truth. You cannot stop all wrinkles. Some are just part of life. But you can push them off by years. And that matters. Because the lines you create in high school from squinting at your phone or frowning at your homework will be there in your twenties unless you break the habit now. Your skin is not a problem to fix later. It is something to protect right now.

You have the upper hand because your skin still bounces back fast. But that advantage does not last forever. Use it while you have it. Stop folding the paper. Stop scrunching the muscle. Give your face a break. The wrinkles you prevent today are the ones you will never have to worry about tomorrow. That is the easiest strategy of all.
