You spend a lot of time on your face. You put on cream every morning and night. You even protect your nose from the sun. But what about your neck? That area under your chin and down to your collarbones? In your 50s, this is the place that can make you look older than you feel. The skin on your neck is thinner than your face. It has fewer oil glands. It loses moisture fast. And it moves all the time. Every time you turn your head or look down, you stretch that skin. Over time, those stretches turn into lines. Some people call them “tech lines” or just wrinkles.
Here is the good news. You can do something about it. You do not need expensive treatments. You just need to treat your neck like part of your face. Actually, like the most fragile part of your face. Would you skip moisturizing your forehead? Of course not. So do not skip your neck.
First, when you put moisturizer on your face, put it on your neck too. Use gentle strokes going up. Do this every morning and night. Use a thick, creamy moisturizer. Your neck needs more moisture than your face because it cannot hold water. Look for “fragrance-free” on the label. Perfume can dry out delicate skin. And do not forget your chest. The skin there is just as fragile. So spread that cream from your collarbones down. Do not forget the back of your neck too.
Second, sunscreen. You know sunscreen prevents wrinkles. But most women forget their neck. They think their shirt will block the sun. It will not. The sun hits your neck from the front when you drive. It hits from the side when you walk. Over the years, that adds up. Your neck looks crepey and loose. So make a rule. After sunscreen on your face, put it on your neck and chest. Use SPF 30 or higher. Reapply if you are outside long. This one habit helps your neck more than any cream.
Third, wash your neck the right way. Many women use soap in the shower. That is a mistake. Soap is harsh. It strips natural oils. Your neck has so few oil glands. So washing with soap dries it out. Instead, use your facial cleanser. Gently massage it on your neck. Rinse with lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water dries skin too. And do not rub your neck with a towel. Pat it dry. Leave it slightly damp. Then put on moisturizer right away. That locks in water.
Fourth, watch how you sleep. A big fluffy pillow bends your neck all night. That creates folds. Those folds become permanent wrinkles. Try a flatter pillow. Or a beauty pillow that keeps your neck straight. Also, try to sleep on your back. Sleeping on your side or stomach squashes your neck against the pillow. That pressure makes lines deeper. It takes time to change. But tuck a pillow behind your back to stay put. Give it a few weeks.
Fifth, think about your phone. Looking down at your phone all day creates deep creases across your neck. Some call it “tech neck”. To avoid it, hold your phone up near eye level. It sounds silly, but it works. You will still look at your phone. Just do not bend your neck down. Keep your head up. Your wrinkles will not get worse as fast.
Last, drink water. Yes, you have heard it before. But water helps your whole body. When you are hydrated, your skin looks plumper. That plumpness fills in lines on your thin neck. Aim for eight glasses a day. Eat juicy foods too. Cucumbers and watermelon are great. Blueberries work too.
Your neck is part of your face. Give it the same care. Moisturize it. Protect it from the sun. Wash it gently. Sleep flat. Watch your phone posture. Drink water. Do these things, and your neck will not give away your age. You will see a smoother neck in the mirror. That will make you smile. And smiling is the best wrinkle prevention of all. So keep smiling. You can do it.
