The One Skin Area Women In Their 20s Forget (And It Ages First)

You check your face every morning. You put on moisturizer, maybe a little serum, and some sunscreen when you remember. That’s great, really. But here’s the thing most women in their twenties miss: your neck, your chest, and the back of your hands are going to show your age way before your forehead does. And if you don’t start paying attention now, you’ll be playing catch-up later.

Think about it. When you look in the mirror, you probably stop at your jawline. But your skin doesn’t stop there. Your neck moves every time you look down at your phone, your chest gets sun every time you wear a V-neck, and your hands go through washing, typing, and weather changes all day long. These spots are thinner and have fewer oil glands than your face. That means they dry out faster and lose their bounce sooner. And because nobody gives them the same care, they can get crepey, lined, and spotty while your face still looks fresh.

Let’s start with the neck and chest. You know those little horizontal lines that show up on your neck? They come from two things: how you sleep and how much sun you get. If you sleep on your side or stomach, your face presses into the pillow. That constant creasing in the same spot slowly etches itself into your skin. And if you sleep with your chin tucked, your neck gets those lines too. The fix is simple: try sleeping on your back. It’s hard at first, but you can train yourself. Put a small pillow under your knees to stay comfortable, and eventually your body gets used to it. Also, every time you put sunscreen on your face, bring it down your neck and all the way to your collarbone. Don’t stop at your chin. Use a lightweight sunscreen that doesn’t feel sticky, and reapply if you’re going outside. Your chest is even more delicate because it sees sun every time you’re in a car or walking outside. That’s why women often start seeing sunspots and loose skin on their chest in their thirties. You can stop that right now by making your chest part of your daily routine.

Now your hands. This is the place people forget the most. You wash your hands probably ten times a day, especially if you use hand sanitizer. That strips the natural oils and dries out the skin. Dry skin looks older because it’s less plump. Plus, your hands get sun every time you drive, walk, or sit by a window. The back of your hands has very little fat, so once the skin thins, veins and tendons become more visible. You can’t reverse that easily, but you can slow it down. Keep a tube of sunscreen by your sink. After you wash your hands, put a little moisturizer on them, and then add sunscreen. Or buy a hand cream with SPF built in. Keep one in your purse, one in your car, and one at your desk. Rub it in like you’re putting on lotion, but make sure you cover the tops of your fingers and knuckles too.

Another thing to watch out for is how you rest your face. If you sit at a desk and lean your chin on your hand, you’re pressing the skin on your cheek and jaw. Over time, that pressure can cause lines. Same thing with talking on the phone and holding it between your ear and shoulder. That creates creases on your neck. Try to be aware of these habits. Set a reminder on your phone or put a sticky note on your monitor that says “hands off face.” It sounds silly, but it works.

One more tip: don’t forget to moisturize these forgotten areas at night. After you wash your face, rub whatever leftover product you have on your hands onto your neck, chest, and the back of your hands. Or use a separate night cream that’s thicker. The point is to keep the skin hydrated while you sleep. That’s when your skin repairs itself, and if it’s dry, it can’t fix lines as well.

Here’s the bottom line: your twenties are the perfect time to build habits that keep your skin looking healthy for decades. You don’t need expensive treatments or complicated routines. You just need to remember that your face doesn’t end at your jaw. Your neck, chest, and hands need the same protection you give your cheeks. Start today. Put sunscreen on your hands before you leave for work. Sleep on your back. Moisturize your chest before bed. Your thirty-year-old self will thank you, and she won’t have to buy a bunch of fancy creams to fix what could have been prevented with a little effort now.

Urea (10-20%) is highly effective—it exfoliates and hydrates. Also look for ceramides, salicylic acid, and dimethicone to soften and protect.
